We were honored when Generac was granted membership to Greentown Labs in August 2014. Joining 47 other startups working on innovative solutions to big energy problems, we have access to benefits that go beyond just desks and prototyping space at Greentown Labs.
Greentown Labs consistently provides on-site events and programs designed to enable members to form valuable partnerships and grow their companies. Last month, we were given the opportunity to present details about Generac to the Board of Advisors, followed by a chance to chat with them over wine and cheese.
The startup incubator also offers member companies the use of shared equipment, like a 3-D printer, which we have used to refine our enclosure design for our propane tank monitor.
A natural advantage of working from Greentown Labs is the community of smart and motivated teams that are working on diverse problems, yet are always willing to spend time helping each other when knowledge and work overlap.
We directly benefitted from such collaboration when looking at cell-based communication technology and providers that are suited to work with a startup. Understory, a weather analytics and hardware startup that installs proprietary weather sensing grids into metropolitan areas to track thunderstorms and other weather events, provided some great advice to help us along. Now that we have finalized the design of our WiFi-connected tank level monitor, this help was crucial as we started to work out a design for consumers that don’t have WiFi connections near their tank.
Greentown Labs’ member companies get together once a month for a town hall meeting to discuss updates related to the space we share and to celebrate recent successes of the member companies over beer and pizza.
Another perk is that Greentown Labs is located in Union Square in Somerville, an area which has gotten some major props from The New York Times. This is perhaps my favorite benefit because working from Greentown Labs has reduced my commute to just 5 minutes.
